The NSA is just the tip of the iceberg. All sorts of law enforcement organizations are getting into the action.

Here are some sources about the devices called Stingray Phone Trackers that collect data from thousands of cell phones. The first link is to a recent story in USA today:

Cellphone data spying: It’s not just the NSA (May 20, 2014)

The second link is to a current Wikipedia article:

Stingray phone tracker

Apparently this has been going on for quite some time. The next link is to a techdirt Article from 2011:

Details Emerging On Stingray Technology, Allowing Feds To Locate People By Pretending To Be Cell Towers

It appears that we need to have some serious discussions about the Fourth Amendment and the proper role of government.

Here is another link to a 2011 article from Wired:

UK Cops Using Fake Mobile Phone Tower to Intercept Calls, Shut Off Phones.

This last article refers to a Def Con 18 talk by Chris Paget that I attended. I did not realize at the time that this proof of concept was actually operational. What is interesting and scary is that while the police departments are paying $200,000 and up for the devices, Chris Paget was able to rig up his system for $1,500. This indicates that it is not hard to get into this game. If you are interested in viewing the talk on YouTube you can find it here. Chris Paget is a very creative individual. If you would like to learn how to read RFID chips at a distance you might want to look at his other talk on YouTube you can find it here.
